An entry in A Bestiary of Strange Women

This project

A BESTIARY OF STRANGE WOMEN is a collection of art. It is split into two sections:

  • DEITIES AND SPIRITS are imaginary creatures and their field notes, written from the perspective of an explorer observing them in the wild.
  • TRANSFORMATIONS are scenarios of normal or almost-normal women transforming into abnormal or altered states of being.

The art in this series is often nonsensical or surreal, ranging from silly to horrifying, but each one represents in at least some small way what it is like to be a strange woman. Some pieces are deliberate meditations on selfhood while others grew out of doodles.

The first sketches for this project were done as early as 2003 ("THE BOTANIST" is the oldest piece) with the bulk of the sketches having been done throughout 2016 - 2018, though by this point all of the art has been replaced with updated versions as I've very slowly improved as an amateur artist. Where applicable, I've linked to blog posts which talk about the evolution or development of certain pieces. This project is open-ended; I'll continue to add to it as I finish more of my ladies.
